The Olten Art Museum is an urban institution and a hub for ideas. Together with the directly adjacent nature museum, the neighboring historical museum and the exhibition rooms of the art association in the architecturally striking town house of Willy Frei and Alois Egger, it is part of a lively cultural center on the edge of Olten's old town. The rooms in the former residential and commercial building, which has been converted into a museum, have an unmistakable charm, but also set clear limits for exhibition activities and the growth of the collection. A new building on Munzingerplatz should offer the museum new development opportunities in the foreseeable future. The Kunstmuseum Olten goes back to a collection of works by the important political draftsman and caricaturist Martin Disteli (Olten 1802 - 1844 Solothurn), founded around the middle of the 19th century. From 1905 this was gradually expanded to a general art collection, initially with a view to artists from the Olten / Solothurn region (Joachim Senn, Johann Christian Flury, Adrian Kümmerly, Bernhard Studer, Otto Frölicher or Arnold Munzinger). Gradually, thanks to the commitment of the curators and the art association founded in 1914, more works by Swiss artists such as Albert Anker and Frank Buchser were added.
