Company description and purpose of company Schloss Weinstein AG
Weinstein Castle, an old noble seat of the town councilors of St.Gallen, was first mentioned in a document at the end of the 14th century. A Hans Varnbuler zu Weinstein is mentioned for the first time in 1375 in the family chronicle of the councilor dynasty of the Varnbuler of St.Gallen. One of the descendants of the first Weinstein lords was Mayor Ulrich Varnbüler of St. Gallen, who made a name for himself as field captain of the St. Gallen troops in the Burgundian Wars. It was this, too, who built Weinstein Castle instead of the all too modest summer residence in Marbach. Varnbuler was an opponent of abbotical sovereignty and thus also the great opponent of the power-hungry Abbot Ulrich Rösch. As one of the initiators of the Rorschach monastery collapse (1489), he was defeated by the Confederates allied with Abbot Ulrich Rösch and expelled from the country. On this occasion, the Rhine Valley came under the sovereignty of the eight old towns, because the Appenzeller were also on the side of the St.Gallen with Ulrich Varnbuler at the head. Ulrich Varnbuler fled to Germany. All of his possessions, including Weinstein, were expropriated. After a lengthy process before the Imperial Court of Justice, Emperor Maximilian I ordered the return of the goods located outside the city of St.Gallen - including Weinstein Castle. Ulrich Varnbuler himself did not experience this anymore. The ownership of Weinstein went to Ulrich's son Johannes, Mayor of Lindau, from him to his son Nikolaus Varnbuler, Würtenberg council, professor of law in Tübingen and multiple rector of the university. Nikolaus Varnbuler, the grandfather of Johann Conrad Varnbuler, who was enfeoffed with hemmings, sold Weinstein in 1559 to his brother-in-law Caspar Schlumpf, mayor of St.Gallen.
