The Freiburg International Film Festival (FIFF) takes place every year in Freiburg im Üchtland. Its aim is to contribute to the preservation of artistic and cultural diversity in Switzerland and Europe by promoting high-quality films. For this reason, it mainly presents works from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The FIFF is committed to inventive, poetic films as an expression of a freedom that is sometimes achieved with great dedication. Since such works do not correspond to the viewing habits and directing techniques of Western cinema, they assume that the audience is willing to be questioned by images that may not meet their expectations. In this way, the FIFF promotes the “different view” and serves to improve understanding of the different cultural and social realities of the world. In this regard, it sets important standards domestically and enjoys an excellent reputation abroad. History In 1980 there was practically no distribution for films from Africa, Asia and Latin America in Switzerland. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Helvetas, the secretariats of the country's most important aid organizations in western Switzerland organized a walking screening of seven films from these continents, shown in several towns in western Switzerland. The basic idea was simple: they wanted to show the cultural diversity of Africa, Asia and Latin America to a larger audience. The success moved the organizers to continue the experiment: the Third World Film Festival was born. In 1986 the festival settled in Freiburg, where the screenings had met with the greatest response, and moved from the parish to the cinema halls. At the same time, the first official competition for the distribution award took place. The idea of ​​sending films on the move has not, however, been completely abandoned. The selection presented in Freiburg could be seen in a good dozen cities in western Switzerland and Ticino in the weeks following the festival. Held annually since 1992, the festival was recognized by UNESCO in 1993 as a contribution to the “World Decade for Cultural Development”. In 1998 it was given its current name: Freiburg International Film Festival.
