Almost exactly 16 years after my first visit to the Zerfreilahorn, I am now trying to give this little contribution to the alpine guide literature a few suitable introductory words. Never in my life would I have dreamed of what the ascent of that time would trigger. Many of the consequences and experiences are not intended for other eyes and ears, but my passion for alpine climbing was unmistakably aroused back then and continues unabated to this day. After a few excursions in existing routes, I quickly discovered the untapped potential of this area. Admittedly, thanks to Hilti, countless new possibilities opened up and my pioneering urge had to be lived out. I was also motivated by the popular opinion that there was nothing worthwhile to get back there anyway. Well, here you hold proof that it is by no means so. Over the past few years, a small, remote, but all the more attractive climbing area has emerged. There are now routes for almost every collar size; Boulder blocks en masse attract the woolly hat artists, well secured climbing gardens for young and old, alpine multi-pitch tours with a predominantly flat character, steeper sectors with many beautiful structures, cracks, intersections, overhangs, alpine ridge climbs as well as serious and extremely difficult tours on the landmark of the Valsertal, the Zerfreilahorn. So variety is provided. For years, the information about the area was only passed on in droplets and in closed hands. A large number of lonely climbing days were the result and will remain in my fond memories. As the number of new tours increased, there was a rethink. It would be a shame if the routes were adequately equipped with good material and then nobody would lay their hands on the rock. But this decision only matured over the years, because it will no longer be the same as it was before, but that's life, changes are part of it. Thank you are deserved by those people whom I cannot mention by name here. In particular, of course, all of my rope and belaying partners, from whom Fritz Humm (my most frequent partner) and Roman Hutzli (my partner for "milestones") deserve a big thank you. In addition, the hut keepers of the Läntahütte, Marietta and Thomas Meier, who repeatedly accommodated us, fed us and supplied us with electricity. The Bodan section of the SAC, which sponsored the material for the climbing gardens around the Läntahütte. All other first-time climbers, who willingly made their information available to me, and of course Achim Pasold from Panico-Verlag, who approached me and offered a hand to realize this work. My family, for their patience, forbearance and for giving me space to exercise. This work does not claim to be complete and certain tours that no longer meet today's standards were not mentioned. I would like to apologize in advance for any mistakes, but one or the other small fish will have slipped through the mesh. Whatever the case, climbing is fun - and those who can do it independently will be able to spend many fulfilling days in the Valsertal. Have fun, stay strong and take care! Michael Illien, Chur, in the summer of 2004.
