Embd (Valais German: Ämd) is a municipality in the Visp district in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It is located in the front part of the Mattertal. Its name is derived from the Old High German "Amat", which means something like "the second hay cut". In the village of Embd, a green slab of quartzite was mined over centuries, which is of outstanding importance in regional architecture. The mining was stopped in 2005 as a result of a landslide that tragically resulted in death. In modern times it was called kalpetran quartzite after its place of loading. The church of the parish is built from this natural stone. Many roofs are covered with slabs of calpetran quartzite.
