Ecublens lies at 428 meters above sea level, 6 kilometers west of the canton's capital, Lausanne (Distance). The original village stretches on a moraine wall between the valleys of Venoge and Sorge, in the Vaudlaender Mittelland a scenic location about 50 m above the lake level of Lake Geneva.

The area of the 5.7 km large municipal area includes a section north Lake Geneva. Ecublens does not directly border the lake; the southern border always runs along the cantonal road, which goes from Lausanne westwards to Morges leads. The Moraene was deposited by the glacial Rhone glacier.

To the east, the area extends into the lowlands of Sorge and in a narrow Zipfel over the University and EPFL grounds to the country estate Dorigny and on the lower reaches of the Chamberonne. In the north, the municipal ban extends over the Forest area Bois d'Ecublens to the railroad line Lausanne-Geneva, on the far Routes forms the northern border. Of the communal areas, 56% in 1997 on settlements, 13% on forest and pollen and 31% on agriculture.

To Ecublens belong the village of Renges (404 m above sea level) on the western side of the Moraenen Walls in the valley of Venoge, the hamlet of Bassenges (407 m above sea level) on the eastern slope of the Moraene, the settlement Epenex (420 m above sea level) between motorway feeder A1A and railway as well as various residential quarters and commercial zones. Neighboring municipalities of Ecublens Denis, Echandens, Bussigny-pres-Lausanne, Renens, Chavannes-pres-Renens and Saint-Sulpice (VD).
