Coal mining in the Riedhof mine near Aeugst am Albis In 1786 a farmer discovered the Riedhof coal deposit while working on the road. Under state control by the Canton of Zurich, the first phase of dismantling soon took place between 1787 and 1814. In 1814, dismantling was discontinued due to a lack of adequate transport links. The second phase of mining began in 1917 during the First World War. In 1919, after initially changing hands several times, a Zurich construction company took over the dismantling. Tunnels were driven back and forth: the operation was mostly unprofitable. The company ran into large debts and the tunnels were closed in 1921. At times, however, up to 30 workers were employed in the mine during this period. In total, however, only about 1200 tons of coal were mined. During the Second World War, there was another dismantling. In 1942 the Sulzer brothers AG and Georg Fischer AG were granted a concession by the canton to exploit coal. With the help of experts from the Gonzen mine, a veritable mine with an extensive, 7-kilometer-long tunnel system was built in a short time. Towards the end of the Second World War, the mine gained a certain economic importance and at times, in 1946, production even exceeded that of Käpfnach near Horgen. The article deals with the historical background and publishes pictures of the “rediscovery” of the Riedhof mine from the last years of operation. Riedhof Mine Association On May 15, 2002, the “Riedhof Mine Association” was founded in Aeugst am Albis. The aim of the association is to preserve the memory of a regionally important industrial monument. During the Second World War, the Riedhof mine was the second largest coal mine in the canton of Zurich, along with KäpfnachHorgen.
