For a few years now, around 40 children from primary and secondary schools in the Langnau community have been attending our newly created integration class in the Bärau schoolhouse. Some of these children have been in Switzerland for less than a year. For them, the German language looks about as foreign to us as the above Albanian and Tamil titles on an information sheet that informs the parents of these children about special German lessons for foreign-language children. Two teachers teach these children in different groups for one or two mornings per week, depending on their individual knowledge of German. In addition to the actual German lessons, the children are familiarized with local school and life habits in small projects and on excursions. A demanding task for the teachers, as the children come from 11 different countries and speak 9 different languages. Lessons end as soon as the children have a sufficiently large vocabulary to be able to follow the lessons in the regular classes without any problems. Already today they are distributed in their regular classes throughout the community on the remaining days. Depending on their possibilities, they work there in regular lessons or solve tasks that they bring with them from the integration class. With this integration class, the school hopes that, on the one hand, foreign-language children will learn German more quickly because the lessons can be specially adapted to them and, on the other hand, the teachers in the regular classes will be relieved for two half-days and the various groups in the class will not also have foreign-language children have to look after. The idea for this integration class was developed by a group of teachers together with members of the school commission in a concept last year. This work was triggered by the results of the PISA study (see Info Bulletin IV / 02). The Langnau schools can thus make better use of the limited financial resources that the canton makes available for these classes. In the course of the year it will become clear to what extent it is actually possible to achieve the goals set. The entire teaching staff of the primary and secondary schools are unanimously behind this concept and are looking forward to the first evaluation results in a year with interest.
