The BIVS was founded in 1995. The founding members were Buckfast enthusiastic beekeepers, some of whom had long-term contact with European Buckfast breeders. In 2003 we renewed the statutes and joined the community of European Buckfast beekeepers as an independent state section with voting rights. In the European Buckfast beekeeping community, around 2000 beekeepers in 12 regional associations from different countries work together. There is a lively exchange of information and knowledge between these associations, for example it is a tradition that the first weekend in March is reserved for the Buckfast breeders' conference. On the first weekend in November, the Buckfast beekeepers meet for the annual general meeting. The Buckfast Beekeeping Association Switzerland (BIVS) today has over 100 members from all over Switzerland. We have a strong presence in western Switzerland, as magazine beekeeping is predominant there. There are also more and more beekeepers from the rest of Switzerland who recognize the advantages of magazine beekeeping and thus take the step to Buckfast. At the 2005 delegates' meeting of the Association of German-speaking Switzerland and Rhaeto-Romanic Bee Friends (VDRB), the delegates accepted the Buckfast bee as the third bee breed with equal rights in Switzerland. With this decision we hope for a good and fair cooperation between the three breeding associations. Mutual respect and recognition of others is very important in a country as small as Switzerland and should serve as a role model for European beekeepers. The Buckfast beekeepers meet every month. On the first Friday of the month in Sargans and on the last Friday in Rothrist. These meetings are informal and guests are very welcome. We also organize trips and specialist lectures so that we are constantly educated, just as our bees keep developing.
